Disney Plus launched on November 12, 2019, and it offers a variety of content, including the new series Dog With a Blog. Show This guide to Walt Disney World's Genie and Lightning Lanes explains paid FastPass, as well as frequently asked questions about ride reservations, line-skipping, and itinerary tools for Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios. In addition, suggestions.) Since the Genie system debuted last fall, we've been extensively testing it in the parks and sharing results in our Genie and Lightning Lanes posts. There are a lot of good reads in there for anyone interested in how Genie works in practice, problems we have with ride reservations, and more. Those posts also contain Genie news and changes, which occur more frequently than you might think! Unsurprisingly, even seasoned Walt Disney World visitors have had a lot of questions. The Genie system is complicated and perplexing, with numerous moving parts and distinct features. It's also a significant departure from its free predecessor at Walt Disney World, and is more akin to Disneyland's MaxPass. We'll try to answer the most common reader questions and concerns in this FAQ and Guide to Genie. October 12, 2022 Update:. This means that Genie will be more expensive on days when demand is expected to be higher at Walt Disney World. Genie pricing will function similarly to the date-based ticket system, with the exception of a pre-published calendar with monthly prices--you won't know how much Genie costs until you log into My Disney Experience on the day of your visit. With that said, we'd expect Genie's price to be more or less tied to ticket prices, so it should be fairly easy to guess based on the 1-day ticket calendar. Walt Disney World has revealed that Genie prices will range from $15 to $22, plus tax, beginning in October 2022. That is just an example of pricing, and no information about the minimum or maximum over the course of the year has been provided. The cost was $20 plus tax on the first day of this new date-based Genie pricing scheme. That was on a day when tickets were $139. This is the most affordable 1-day ticket price for the rest of the month, so the date-based change to Genie is effectively a $5 price increase on the low end. Single-day ticket prices reached $154 over the weekend. Genie was priced at $22, which was reasonable. Genie, on the other hand, is still $22 as of Monday, which is another $139 ticket day. (On Friday, which was a $149 day, the price of Genie did not increase.).) Given all of this, it appears that Walt Disney World is simply experimenting with how far it can raise the price of Genie while still maintaining target purchase levels. It'll be interesting to see what Genie charges during peak season dates in November and December, when day tickets top out at $159 per person. Genie ought to. After October, Disney may simply try to raise the price incrementally. Now for some words of caution. First and foremost, you do not require. On the contrary, because of its unfriendly user interface, proclivity for glitches, and the fact that it will increase your screen time, this feature in the My Disney Experience app can be frustrating. To that end, see Best Time-Saving Strategies for Walt Disney World, the result of extensive 'testing' to determine the best and worst ways to beat the crowds as of Fall 2022. At Magic Kingdom, Genie is the clear winner. There are superior strategies for saving time waiting in line in the other three parks. Even Disney's Hollywood Studios, which has many popular rides with long lines, has better ways to avoid them. Anyway, we strongly advise you to review that comparison and plan your trips accordingly. This is especially true now that Genie has date-based pricing and will cost $5 more during the holiday season. That's a significant increase over the course of a trip, particularly for a family of four. For this and other reasons, we strongly advise being selective and strategic about when and where you purchase the Genie service. It is never necessary and is frequently ineffective! Second, Walt Disney World has been extremely busy in recent months, and this is only going to get worse as we get closer to Christmas. The more people who subscribe to the Genie service, the less useful it becomes. On some days and in some parks, you may only be able to get a couple of worthwhile ride reservations, making it not worth the money or hassle. Even with the date-based price increase, this will remain a problem until early 2023. After that, here's everything you need to know about Genie and Lightning Lanes at Walt Disney World as of mid-October 2022. This will help you master Genie and use it to book more rides than the average guest! What became of the free FastPass system? FastPass is no longer available at Walt Disney World. Genie, the permanent replacement, is quite different. What are Lightning Lanes, the paid Genie service, the free Genie feature, and a la carte attraction selections (ILLs)? This FAQ assumes you're already familiar with the differences between the new Genie system's various components. See Lighting Lanes v for a complete breakdown and foundational knowledge. Genie+ at Walt Disney World. What exactly is the My Disney Experience app's free Genie service? The My Disney Experience app's free Disney Genie service will "maximize your park time" with a personalized itinerary feature that will "quickly and seamlessly map out an entire day.".” For more information on why this is such a letdown and pointless feature, read our Review of Walt Disney World's Free Genie Itinerary Creator. As a result, we won't waste any more time discussing it here. Genie+ BasicsWhat is the most important aspect of the new system? Genie, in our opinion, is more important than Individual Lightning Lanes. We generally advise planning around the latter--doing those rides at rope drop or late in the evening to avoid paying extra per ride. How much does Genie cost at Walt Disney World? Genie, as previously stated, employs date-based pricing. Expect to pay $19 to $23 per person per day plus tax for the rest of 2022. Genie selections, like FastPass, can be made 60 days in advance. No. Genie is a same-day ride reservation system, and selections can be made for everyone starting at 7 a.m., regardless of whether you're on-site, off-site, an Annual Passholder, a DVC member, etc. One of the most common reader complaints has been the inability to pre-book any ride reservations. It will be interesting to see if Walt Disney World changes that in late 2022 or later. When can Genie+ be purchased? Beginning at 12 p.m., Genie service can be purchased as an in-app purchase through the My Disney Experience app.:00 a.m. on their visit/use date. We simply purchased Genie around the age of six.:50 a.m., just before our first ride reservation--it takes about 30 seconds to buy through My Disney Experience. Is Genie available as a ticket add-on? Not anymore. Walt Disney World removed the Genie ticket add-on for the remainder of this year and 2023, infuriating many fans. Despite popular belief, this is being done to assist. Which attractions are accessible through the Genie service? The following is the official Genie list of attractions.: Magic Kingdom
Epcot
Hollywood Studios
Animal Kingdom
Which of the Genie choices are the "best"? We actually rank the best Genie Lightning Lane picks for each park based on the amount of time saved and the speed with which return times fill up and run out. This is extremely useful for determining the order in which to book your ride reservations.:
Because popular rides sell out early in the day and there are no re-rides, we strongly advise making your Genie Lightning Lane selections in order of priority, or risk being "shut out" of popular attractions like Slinky Dog Dash, Frozen Ever After, Jungle Cruise, and so on. Is it critical to make a Genie reservation at 7 a.m.? Will we be penalized for sleeping in? Guests who book their first Genie selection at or around 7 a.m. will have a slight advantage, but it will not be insurmountable. It's fine to sleep in, but we recommend making a reservation before the park opens. The "why" of this is discussed in. I’m booking right at 7:00:00 a.m. and STILL am not receiving immediate return times--what gives? You are not alone--at 7 a.m., there is fierce competition, resulting in fast return times for certain popular attractions. The fastest rides are Jungle Cruise, Peter Pan's Flight, Remy's Ratatouille Adventure, and Frozen Ever After. The most popular by far is Slinky Dog Dash, which can fill up in seconds or minutes depending on the season. Follow our Speed Strategy for Genie Selections for this attraction and whenever possible. Is Genie becoming more available throughout the morning? Yes. If you are having trouble loading the app or encounter an error at 7:Instead of booking the first Lightning Lane selection you see at 7 a.m. (which happens far more frequently than you might think), it may be better to wait.:03 am (or thereabouts). There are usually two refills before 7 a.m.:30 a.m., as well as others throughout the day, typically shortly after the hour or half-hour. Walt Disney World Ride Reservation Refill Rules. This can make booking Lightning Lanes for the best attractions much easier. I'm having trouble picturing Genie in the parks; can you help? See our series of posts for a step-by-step single-day itinerary using Genie and Lightning Lanes.:
Those sample itineraries, like everything else, may be overwhelming and discouraging. Keep in mind that a typical touring itinerary can be overwhelming and discouraging for first-timers. Walt Disney World is one of the world's most complicated and convoluted vacation destinations, and it only becomes "easy" with knowledge and experience. How many Genie attractions can guests book in a single day? That varies greatly depending on the attractions you choose, their return times, the park, and attendance levels. From Presidents' Day to Spring Break, crowds at Walt Disney World increased. Summer crowds were not as bad as in the spring, and the Genie system worked better for most guests who made their first selections early in the morning and were conscientious about booking subsequent selections. Having said that, even on the busiest days of the year, we were able to book at least three attractions through Genie. We've been able to do more than a dozen Park Hopping between Magic Kingdom and Epcot during the off-season. Having said that, some readers have shared horror stories about only being able to get one or two choices during peak times. See My Day Using Genie Lightning Lanes in Peak Crowds at Disney's Hollywood Studios for an idea of how difficult it is to use Genie on a 10/10 crowd level day. That's essential reading for anyone planning a trip to Walt Disney World during peak season. You can also read Best Way to Use Genie at Disney's Hollywood Studios for a half-day approach that will save you a lot of time at Walt Disney World's most frustrating park. Individual Lightning Lane BasicsWhich attractions are available for purchase via Individual Lightning Lane? The following is a complete list of Walt Disney World's Individual Lightning Lanes.:
At Walt Disney World, how much do individual Lightning Lane attractions cost? Currently, prices range from $12 per attraction to $20 per person, depending on the ride and date. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is typically the most expensive, costing $20. Prices may be lower on some days and higher on others throughout the year. When are individual Lightning Lane attractions available for booking? Guests staying at a Walt Disney World resort hotel can buy and schedule the first Individual Lightning Lane attraction at 7 a.m., before off-site guests who can do so when the park opens. Both Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance tickets sell out quickly. It's unlikely that you'll be able to book either of those if you're not staying on-site. How many reservations for Individual Lightning Lane attractions can each guest make per day? Two reservations must be made at different attractions. (In other words, no Star Wars.): Rise of the Resistance--or whatever--twice.) Can you schedule Individual Lightning Lane rides? Yes. Individual Lightning Lane attractions allow you to choose your return time slot based on availability. So far, we've noticed that earlier in the day tends to fill up first, and evenings are the last to sell out. Other Frequently Asked Genie and ILL QuestionsWhat am I doing wrong? I'm having a problem with [insert technical difficulty]. It's most likely not a "you issue," but rather a "system error.".” The entire Genie system, like so much of Walt Disney World technology, is extremely glitchy, prone to crashes, downtime, and other assorted errors. The best technical support we can provide is to force close My Disney Experience and reopen the app. That is unlikely to resolve the problem, but it is worth a shot. Is it better or worse to use Genie or book Lightning Lanes at Walt Disney World on certain days? In general, the lower the crowds, the better your chances of success with Genie and Lightning Lanes. See our 2022 Walt Disney World Crowd Calendar for suggestions on which months, weeks, or specific dates to visit. If you've already decided on your dates but want day-of-week suggestions for each park, check out our Best of. Is it possible to purchase both Genie and Individual Lightning Lane access? Yes. Because there is no overlap between what Genie and ILLs cover, guests may purchase both. Is it possible for a guest to make Genie selections if they purchase one Individual Lightning Lane reservation at 7 a.m.? Because they work independently of one another and have their own costs, the system allows both to be booked at the same time. In practice, we recommend making your first Individual Lightning Lane reservation at least a couple of hours after the park opens so it doesn't conflict with your first Genie selection--or riding standby before crowds build. You mentioned booking Star Wars and Slinky Dog Dash.: How did the Resistance rise at 7 a.m.? Disney's Hollywood Studios is home to Walt Disney World's most popular Genie attraction and the most popular Individual Lightning Lane attraction. Both of these frequently book up within seconds of 7 a.m., posing a practical problem: how do you book both? There is no good way for one person to do both except to work quickly and hope for the best. Realistically, you'll need two adults awake at 7 a.m., one booking Slinky Dog Dash and the other Star Wars.: Rise of the Resistance. Can the Genie service be used to book the same attraction multiple times? No, re-ride privileges are not currently available. This, like everything else, is subject to change as the system evolves. How many ride reservations can be made using the Genie service at once? Guests can make one reservation at a time, with the option to make another immediately after tapping into an attraction or according to the 120-minute rule. What’s the 120 minute rule? Genie ride reservations work in the following manner: you can book one at a time and then make another choice after two hours (120 minutes) or once you tap into your previous Genie selection (both tapstiles at attractions with two)—whichever comes first. That only scratches the surface. See How the Genie 120 Minute Rule Works at Walt Disney World for more information. When does the clock start ticking on the 120-minute rule in the morning? There's some debate over whether the clock starts ticking at 7 a.m. (or whenever your first ride reservation is made) or at park opening. It does not begin until the park opens. As an example, suppose you make your first Lightning Lane selection at 7 p.m.:15 a.m., booking Jungle Cruise with a return window of 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., and Magic Kingdom opens for the day at 9 a.m.:At 11 a.m., you can make your next Lightning Lane selection via Genie. That is, 120 minutes after 9 a.m. Can I make multiple Genie selections at the same time? Yes! The official wording from Walt Disney World is ambiguous, but it is possible to "stack" Genie selections. In fact, there are system quirks that allow you to accumulate Lightning Lane reservations via Genie later in the day. If you want to take advantage of this, check out our Tips for "Stacking" Genie Ride Reservations. Is it possible to return to Genie ride reservations early or late? Yes. You can enter Lightning Lanes up to 5 minutes early or 15 minutes late. These are automatic grace periods, and you do not need to ask a Cast Member for them; simply tapping in will do. (In fact, don't ask a Cast Member because they may tell you that there is no grace period, which is incorrect.).) No other exceptions are permitted. Can guests select their own return times using Genie? No. You get the earliest available 1-hour return window, with no option to choose later or earlier times, just like the old paper FastPass system. What if other plans, ADRs, or ride reservations conflict? Genie will not prevent you from making overlapping plans, so you must monitor this yourself to ensure it does not occur. If the return time of a specific attraction conflicts with your schedule, either choose a different attraction with a non-problematic return time, or wait 5-10 minutes until the clock moves forward on return times, removing the conflict. Do you think it's a good idea to buy Genie as part of a ticket or vacation package? No. Most visitors will not require Genie every day of their trip. If you want it for peace of mind and don't mind spending money on it, go for it. However, most visitors will only require it for 2-3 days of their vacation. Which parks do you think Genie should visit? Genie is most useful at Magic Kingdom because that park has the most popular attractions with Lightning Lane entrances. Because of the number of major rides at Disney's Hollywood Studios, it is the second most useful. Due to the low ride counts in each park, Genie is least useful at Epcot and Animal Kingdom. However, the operating hours make it simple to divide a Genie day between Epcot and Animal Kingdom--as we discuss in My Morning in Animal Kingdom Using Genie and My Afternoon in Epcot Using Genie. Genie reservations will be made in what way? During the ride reservation process, guests can select family and friends in My Disney Experience, and one person can complete the process for everyone. (It should go without saying, but Genie must be purchased for each and every guest who wishes to use the service.).) Can only certain members of my party make Genie reservations? Yes. It's extremely adaptable--if half your group wants to do one ride and the other half wants to do another, that's perfectly fine. During the Genie selection process, you decide who will ride. Can only certain members of a party purchase Individual Lightning Lane access? Yes. The same procedure as described above applies to selecting and deselecting members of your party to purchase ILLs. Does this system support MagicBands? Yes. It also works with the newly released MagicBand. Having said that, MagicBands are not required. If you don't have MagicBands, you can use your park tickets or MagicMobile on your phone instead. Is it possible to refresh and rebook ride reservations with Genie, as it was with FastPass? Yes, but it’s very difficult. Because there is no way to change a Genie reservation, you must cancel and rebook, which is a time-consuming process. What you saw when refreshing will most likely be gone by the time you return to the booking screen. What else does Genie have in store for you at Walt Disney World? Ride reservations and line-skipping on the aforementioned attractions, as well as AR filters for photos and guided audio tours of the parks, are available via the Lightning Lane. Does Genie+ include PhotoPass downloads? No. It excludes PhotoPass downloads at Walt Disney World, but only at Disneyland. Does Park Hopping work with Genie and/or Individual Lightning Lane attractions? Yes. You can reserve attractions after 2 p.m. in a park other than the one where you started your day if you have a Disney Park Pass. Individual Lightning Lane attraction purchases follow all of the normal rules of all three (Park Hopping, Genie, and Lightning Lanes). What if I want to Park Hop but the return time for the attraction I reserved through Genie is before 2 p.m.? Genie+ automatically accommodates Park Hopping. If the displayed return time is before 2 p.m., the system will automatically change your reservation window to 2-3 p.m. if you are not already in that park. This policy can be useful for making Genie selections for popular attractions (Slinky Dog Dash is the best example) early in the day. What about virtual queues? Both Star Wars: The virtual queues for Rise of the Resistance and Remy's Ratatouille Adventure have ended. Guardians of the Galaxy, Walt Disney World's newest attraction: Epcot's Cosmic Rewind has just opened and is currently using a virtual queue. See our ride guide: Ride Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind. When is Walt Disney World going to be "done" with virtual lines? Probably not anytime soon. We anticipate that the virtual line for Guardians of the Galaxy will be long.: In the fall of 2022, Cosmic Rewind will come to an end during the off-season. If the virtual queue is not retired during the off-season, it is entirely possible that Cosmic Rewind will continue to use a virtual queue until January 2023 or later. Then there's the space-constrained TRON Lightcycle Run, which will most likely use a virtual queue when it debuts at Magic Kingdom later this decade. What has happened to standby lines? Nothing. Except for Guardians of the Galaxy, all attractions still have walk-up standby lines.: Cosmic Rewind. Has this resulted in longer or shorter standby times? It really depends on the attraction and when comparing wait times. Standby wait times are already longer on average than they were in early October. When compared to the FastPass era, standby wait times should be reduced and lines should move more quickly. Is there an advantage to using Genie or Individual Lightning Lanes on-site? Not with Genie, but those staying on-site can buy ILLs at 7 a.m. instead of the park's opening time. Are there any plans for additional on-site perks in the future? That remains to be seen. On-site hotel occupancy targets are extremely important metrics at Walt Disney World. If bookings remain low or cancellations remain high, expect more incentives to stay on-site, including the possibility of Genie being included with select stays. Genie or ILLs can Annual Passholders purchase? Annual Passholders, like regular theme park ticket holders, can purchase Individual Lightning Lanes or add Genie on a per-day basis. Genie has been in extremely high demand in Florida. With fewer eligible attractions, the capacity for a Walt Disney World AP add-on is unlikely. Don't expect to see one this year--or possibly ever. Are there any discounts for Annual Passholders or DVC Members? Not yet, and it's unlikely they'll be available anytime soon. Will these systems compel me to spend the entire day glued to my phone? Using the Genie systems necessitates phone use throughout the day--there's no getting around it. It could, however, be as little as a few minutes every 90 to 120 minutes, or shortly after entering an attraction queue. It will not be necessary to be constantly connected to your phone. That being said, as with FastPass, it's likely that guests who refresh the app obsessively and are diligent about making reservations will have an advantage. What about guests without smartphones? They are out of luck. Guests who do not have My Disney Experience will be unable to use Genie and Lightning Lanes and will instead be placed on standby. What effect does this have on Single Rider or Rider Switch? It doesn’t. Rider Switch has recently been updated to work better with this system; those guests use the Lightning Lane entrances to access attractions that offer rider switch/swap. What modifications have been made to the Disability Access Service? With Disability Access Service (DAS), two new features have been introduced.: Pre-arrival registration and planning via live video chart, as well as a self-selection tool for same-day DAS return times. These are now available; learn more about them in the Guide to Disability Access Service (DAS) at Walt Disney World. Unfortunately, we are not experts on DAS, so we cannot provide additional insight or recommendations for those new tools. We can say that we've received numerous reader complaints about the new system, including delays and understaffing. As a result, we strongly advise starting the pre-arrival registration process as soon as possible before your trip. Be patient and enter with the expectation that it will take some time to complete. This is just one of the many ways Walt Disney World is currently understaffed. What "could have been so much worse"? Several of you questioned how our "this could have been so much worse" line in the announcement post could possibly be true. To begin, recognizing this necessitates admitting that paid FastPass was an unavoidable necessity. Don't cry because free FastPass is no longer available; instead, smile because it didn't happen three years ago when it was first planned. 😉 All rumored versions of the paid FastPass replacement were either more expensive or had stricter policies than this. The version that was on the verge of being realized was entirely a la carte. Take a look at the Premier Access pricing at Disneyland Paris to see what we mean. Furthermore, all of Walt Disney World's paid FastPass "pilot programs" cost more and provided less. Walt Disney World most likely chose the most perplexing option, but it will make a lot more sense in practice (or for anyone who has previously used MaxPass). We don't like Genie or Lightning Lanes and aren't trying to "sell" you on them--we're just pointing out that this is far from the worst case scenario. Disney said: "We've listened to your feedback — you want easier planning, more flexibility, and better tools to help you make the most of your visit — and that's exactly what Disney Genie is here to do.".” Is it really, though?!? Lol. You've just read 5,000 words about this "better" and "easier" tool, and chances are you still have questions. What do you think? 😉 How can we give Walt Disney World feedback on Genie or Lightning Lanes? We recommend sending an email with your thoughts on how Genie or Lightning Lane will affect your Walt Disney World vacations or business. . This is far superior to complaining in the comments section, social media, forums, and so on. (However, Disney sees all of this as well.).) Rather than starting petitions, which are generally ineffective, include feedback in guest satisfaction surveys, bring it up when speaking with managers or other park leadership, or even contact Guest Relations. Remember that, while Genie and Lightning Lanes are now available, this system will continue to evolve in the coming weeks and months. The system may have debuted before it had been thoroughly tested and adjusted, so that process will be played out in real time for actual guests. In other words, we should know more in 2022 as the system evolves. In order to help with demand and capacity, some Individual Lightning Lane attractions have been shifted over to Genie, and parade viewing has been added. Thanksgiving 2022 will be the next big test, as the peak holiday tourist season begins the week before Thanksgiving and will last until early January 2023. We'll keep you updated as more changes are likely to be implemented beginning that holiday weekend. We'll also keep this FAQ updated as we learn more and receive more reader questions. This should answer the majority of the readers' questions about the Genie app feature and Lightning Lanes that are coming to Walt Disney World.
